International Bioethics Debate 2009 Final
Round .
More than a dozen
debate teams from Japan and abroad debated the same resolution that Euthanasia
should be legalized, taking both the affirmative and negative sides. They also
joined to judge each other with the invited judges including Mr.
Loke Wing
Fatt (SAID, Singapore), Dr. Joseph Zompetti (Illinois State University), and Dr.
Jack Yu (Shih Hsin University, Taiwan). Participating debaters came not only
from Kyushu University but also from Kyoto Pharmaceutical University, Beijing
Language and Culture University, X'ian International Studies University,
Assumption University (Thailand), Mahidol University (Thailand), and Shih Hsin
University.
Each team debated two rounds and judged one round in the
preliminary, leading to the final round in which the affirmative team of Alex
Berger (Illinois State University, USA) - Wang Jingyi (X'ian International
Studies University, China) defeated the negative team of Cynthia Luo - Aishwarya
Nair (Assumption University, Thailand).
The tournament followed 5-day
long policy debate workshop conducted by Dr. Joseph Zompetti of the Illinois
State University, with participants from Japan, China, Thailand, the U.S., and
Taiwan.
Both the tournament and the workshop were part of a larger
project to develop contents-based foreign language teaching materials about
bioethics funded by Kyushu University Interdisciplinary Programs in Education
and
Projects in Research Development (P&P) and Kyushu University Faculty
of Languages & Cultures (FLC).
