Debate in English has
long been an important part of education in many Asian countries especially in
those areas where British colonial influences are obvious. It has helped produce
many internationally-minded intellectuals and leaders. More recently, in
countries like Thailand, South Korea, and China, without British colonization,
where English has been learnt only as a school foreign language as in Japan,
have quickly adopted and developed strong debate programs in schools and
universities. Their debate teams have become internationally competitive and
achieved successes in Asian and World tournaments. In Japan, where debating has
been practiced both in English and Japanese, debate teams have just started
participating in
international competitions but without much success.
Mr. Loke is a world-famous expert debate trainer who teaches debating around the world including Japan. He will talk about the current development of debate education in Asian countries and suggest what we can do to improve debating skills of Japanese students.
This open lecture is
followed by a two-day intensive debate workshop (Oct. 3 & 4). Please contact

内容 アジア各国ではかつて英国領であった地域を中心に英語によるディベート訓練が盛んに行われ、国際的に活躍する人材の訓練の一翼を担ってきた。近年、英国領ではなかった、日本と同様に英語を外国語として学習している国（タイ、韓国、中国など）でも高校生や大学生を対象にした英語ディベート教育が盛んになり、国内での訓練が強化されるとともに、国際的なディベート大会で活躍するチームを輩出している。一方日本の学生チームは国際大会への参加が始まったが、入賞するレベルには達していない。
講師のLoke氏は日本を含めた世界各地で精力的にディベート指導を行い、特にアジア地域のディベート教育事情に精通している。講演では、アジア各国のディベート教育事情を紹介してもらい、日本人のディベート能力を高めるために何をなすべきかを提言してもらう。
