　本書には灸術による病気の治療について詳しく紹介した、史上初の西洋人による著書の英語版を収録している。執筆したのは医師ではなく、オランダ東インド会社の拠点バタビアで勤務していたヘルマン・ブショフというオランダ人牧師で、今日では忘れられた人物である。
　長年足通風に悩んでいたブショフはバタビアで何度もヨーロッパ人医師たちから治療を受けたが、思うような効果が得られなかった。迷った末に彼は市内のベトナム出身の女医に助けを求め、膝の上に灸をすえる治療を受けた。
　その効果は絶大なものだった。ブショフは大いに心動かされ、「Moxa」(もぐさ)という素晴らしい治療薬をヨーロッパの同胞たちに紹介しようと決心した。彼はオランダ東インド会社の医師たちの助けを借りて、痛風に関する西洋の書物を徹底的に調べ、通風の原因及びもぐさの効能について研究した。
しかしオランダ語の原稿が出版されたのは彼が亡くなったあとだった。彼の著書は大きな反響を呼び、やがてドイツ語、英語にも翻訳された。ブショフのおかげで「Moxa」という言葉は、ヨーロッパの多くの言語に定着することになる。しだいに医師たちももぐさについて研究を行なうようになった。とくにウィレム・テン・ライネ（Willem ten Rhijne）やエンゲルベルト・ケンペル（Engelbert Kaempfer）の貢献は大きく、もぐさは半世紀に亘りヨーロッパで議論の的となった。しかしより専門的な論文が相次いで発表されたために、牧師であり医学には素人と見なされたブショフの名はしだいに忘れ去られていった。
　本書に収められているのは、ブショフの生涯と彼の著作の英語版である。わかりにくい箇所やオランダ語の原著から逸脱した箇所には脚注をつけている。
