研究の視点

言語現象を言語理論のみで説明することには限界があると考えています。認知語用論・関連性理論 (Relevance Theory) の枠組みをベースに、ヒトの言語活動や認知活動を言語理論と認知理論の双視点から研究しています。関連性理論の中で著名な論文であるWilson and Sperber (1993: 135-136)では、発話解釈を次のように述べています。

Let us say that a given interpretation of an utterance is consistent with the principle of relevance if a rational communicator might have expected it to be optimally relevant to the hearer, i.e., to achieve an adequate range of contextual effects as economically as possible. Then it is easy to show that every utterance has at most one interpretation with the principle of relevance.

発話解釈は認知的に処理されるべきものだと考えます。一つの発話の意味は、最小限の処理労力により十分な認知効果が導かれた時点で確定します。何か難しいようですが、われわれの発話解釈は一瞬のうちに行われており、その解釈はおおむね正しく行われています。こうした認知理論をもとに、発話解釈に関わる言語の形式と意味、意味を確定するための語用論的推論などを研究しています。
